History
The Monte was founded by the Arciconfraternita del Santissimo Sacramento in April 1564, obtaining the approval of the VIceroy of Naples in 1566. In 1652 the Monte was de facto refounded by the archbishop Sanfelice and entrusted to the administration of the cathedral's chapter, following the closure of the Arciconfraternita. From 1862 it was administered by the local Congregazione di carità. In 1941 it incorporated the Monte di credito su pegno di Scigliano nel monte. It ceased its activity in 1963, when on 23 January it was incorporated in the Cassa di risparmio di Calabria e Lucania, with a decree by the president of the Republic.
Activities
Pawnbroking, initially with no interest rates for amounts smaller than 3 ducats. Interest rates were introduced in 1633, up to a maximum of 2,5%, growing up to 4% during the nineteenth century. The Monte also functioned as deposit.
Internal organization
The Monte was governed by four officials: a canon from the cathedral, two noblemen and a representative of the people. From the seventeenth century the administration passed to the cathedral's chapter and the, during the eighteenth century, to the city council.
