Monte di Pietà activities

History
First reports about the Monte date back to 1466. In 1469, the headquarters of the institute was located in San Benedetto, close to the city's main square, from which it later moved to nowadays' via Cesare Battisti. In 1485, the municipality appropriated its liquid capital. The Monte was refounded in 1488 by friar Andrea da Faenza, entrusting its management to the confraternities of San Bernardino and Santa Maria degli Angeli. In 1844, the institution went under the control of the Bishop and in 1864 (but informally as early as 1861) was concentrated in the Congregation of charity of Norcia, which was later replaced by Ente Comunale di Assistenza (E.C.A.). In 1948, the Monte was incorporated into Cassa di Risparmio di Spoleto.

Regulatory framework
Statute of 1490; Statute of 1496.

Internal organization
Each of the two confraternities responsible for the Monte from 1488 elected a camerlengo (whose charge was six-monthly); designation was presided over the Guardian of the Observant Franciscan convent of the Annunziata. From 1496 there was just one camerlengo whose charge wa s extended to one year; two officials with auditing and surveillance tasks would be appointed. From the mid-eighteenth century, a single assembly of members of the two confraternities elected a cashier, a keeper of pledges and a valuer.
