History
A first failed attempt to found a Monte di Pietà in Padua dates back to 1469. The opening of the institute was however only possible in 1491, thanks to the direct intervention of Bishop Pietro Barozzi and the preaching of Observant Franciscan Bernardine of Feltre, called by him in the city. The year following the foundation, Bernardine of Feltre promoted the foundation of a Fraglia del Monte, whose members paid one soldo a month in favour of the cashes of the Monte. The institute experienced no hard times - except during the War of the League of Cambrai - until the seventeenth century, when it was plagued by war, famine and embezzlement. An even more serious crisis occurred in 1797, following the French occupation of Padua. In 1807, the Monte passed under the administration of the Napoleonic Congregazione di Carità, regaining its autonomy in 1819, on the return of the Austrians. During World War I, the Monte was transferred to Florence and Bologna, given the proximity with the front. Returning to Padua, in 1922 it assumed the management of the Monti di Monselice and Piove di Sacco. In 1928, it was incorporated into Cassa di Risparmio di Padova, with Decreto Regio dated August 17th, 1928.
