The Cassa di Sconto, part of the only public bank in the south of Italy, the Banco delle Due Sicilie, operated from the moment of its foundation in 1818 until the institutional transformations of the Unification of Italy to support commerce and industry by providing short-term credit at reasonable interest rates. Tracing the history of the efforts to create such a service, the difficult early period of the Cassa's existence and the richness of the vast amount of documentation produced during the Cassa's fifty years of activity, the author traces not only the political reasons behind the establishment of the Cassa, but also the commercial fervor of the Neapolitan economic marketplace in the first half of the XIXth century.
The volume is introduced by a preface by Larry Neal, who outlines the possibility of comparison with other financial systems that contributed to the spread of financial capitalism globally.
