The recent issue of the journal «Il Santo. Rivista francescana di storia dottrina arte» (LXII, 2022) contains a reading note by Antonio Montefusco on the volume edited by Pietro Delcorno and Irene Zavattero Credito e Monti di Pietà tra Medioevo ed età moderna. Un bilancio storiografico and published by il Mulino in 2020.
Tracing the themes covered by the 12 papers collected in this publication, Montefusco stresses how the volume constitutes «un risultato finalmente maturo di una talpa ‘‘storiografica’’ che scava da molto tempo su un settore cronologico peculiare» and on an institution that acts as a catalysing element of previous reflections and an element of rupture and profound innovation in the economic history between the late Middle Ages and the modern age. The aim pursued by these papers, some of which were discussed during the conference La riflessione storiografica sui Monti di Pietà. Per una prima messa a punto held in Trento on 20 and 21 November 2018, is precisely to bring together the conclusions of the historiographical debate on the Monti di Pietà, emphasising on the one hand the richness of the topic and on the other defining which questions still need further investigation. For that reason, the volume is described as «uno strumento molto utile anche per chi [...] si interessa di storia della cultura e precisamente della letteratura, e che anzi permette di insistere sul fatto che il libro è ampiamente consigliabile anche a dei giovani studiosi su terreni circonvicini (non per forza, cioè, di stretto ambito storico-sociale).»
